The new iPad uses a new A5 dual-core processor, which Apple CEO Steve Jobs says is twice as fast as the previous iPad. He also said it will help boost graphics performance making it nine times faster. The newer iPad is also about 33 percent thinner and lighter than the original iPad: 1.3 pounds instead of 1.5. Yes, the iPad got thinner. I knew this would happen, but I didn't expect it to get thinner than the iPhone 4. That was a nice bit of engineering on Apple's part. When I finally held the iPad 2, the difference was noticeable. It's even lighter than my current iPad (I held one in each hand). I honestly never thought the first iPad was heavy, but by shaving off a fraction of a pound, Apple may have just made the new iPad a little more attractive to people considering the once lighter-than-the-iPad Motorola Xoom. Speaking of which, wonder how many people will remember that the Xoom was 1.3 pounds first?

Most of the really exciting stuff hasn't come from big corporations with enormous budgets, it's come from experimentalist amateurs. I’m using the bluetooth keyboard to type this review out. I like the iPad a lot. I can foresee using this device everyday but it’s not the greatest ebook reader. I’m not certain if my frustration stems mostly from the software (the reading applications) or the hardware. I don’t think the iPad is a Kindle killer (or dedicated eink device) because I think the primary purpose of the iPad is not long form narrative reading.

My official opinion is to wait. The device, as it stands, is so close to the original iPhone that you get a sense of Deja Vu when you open the box and are exposed to the empty canvas bare of apps. Out of the box it is, at best, a large iPod Touch. As Adam Engst wrote on Tidbits: “Here’s the thing that I’ve realized after using the iPad – it’s a blank slate, a tabula rasa.” This is both good and bad. Because even the iBook store is not pre-installed, Kindle konverts may be disappointed and because most of the best functionality comes in the form of iWork for iPad and any number of apps and games, as a pure, unadulterated Apple artifact it is a bit underwhelming.

The iPad, which will begin selling this weekend, is “wicked fast” and has a battery life that’s longer than Apple’s claim of 10 hours, Walt Mossberg, technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal, wrote in a review yesterday. In my Feb. 2 column, I speculated that many notebook computer users would abandon their laptops completely and replace them with iPads. I also said that I expected a substantial number of users to buy an iPad to use in addition to their computer and/or iPhone.

Now, having had my hands on an iPad for several days, I believe the latter assumption is more likely.

It turns out the iPad isn't as much a laptop replacement as I thought (though it could easily be used as one). Instead, it's an entirely new category of mobile device.
